Worst thing about being vegan/vegan favourites tag

This blog post (and accompanying video), examine my vegan favourites, plus what I find hardest about being vegan. Sometimes it’s nice to sit back and reflect on what life has been like since qoing vegan! I was tagged to make a vegan favourites video by another YouTuber, Carbs are Happiness, and I have to say I really enjoyed making the video! For one thing, it’s a lot easier when all the questions are written out for you. I really need to make more Q and A videos!

“Veganism is not a sacrifice, it’s a joy” – Gary Francione

I love this quote because a) I do think veganism is a wonderful, joyful thing to embrace and b) I don’t believe in sacrifice. Like, I literally think nobody should ever make sacrifices, at least not in the way most people mean when they talk about sacrifices.

This is off topic, but I think the number one reason for misery in life is sacrifice. If you don’t want to do something, don’t do it. And if it’s something you should do, ask yourself why you don’t want to. I make what others might perceive to be sacrifices all the time, but they aren’t sacrifices for me, because my greatest joy in life is helping family and friends. And when I don’t want to, I don’t. I don’t think you should ever find yourself doing something just to be a martyr.

How many vegans does it take to change a lightbulb?

Answer: 4. One to change the lightbulb ,and three more to hand out pamphlets and convince everyone it’s really very easy.

It’s funny because it’s pretty much true. I’m always amazed at how difficult non-vegans imagine it must be to cook vegan food. At a dinner party the other night a woman was asking me how I managed to cook vegan food, since I admitted I don’t really like to cook. She looked very sympathetic and said it must be even harder to cook vegan food, and I told her it obviously isn’t – things cook a lot faster and my kids are more fond of the food in general.

3. FAVOURITE hypothetical scenario that gets thrown at you as a vegan?

If you saw a kid and a dog drowning, which would you save and why?

I’d definitely save the kid. I’m not all that crazy about dogs. And no, I haven’t figured out an elaborate justification for my immediate reaction, either. I can’t always have great reasons for all my decisions.

4. FAVOURITE vegan meat replacement?

Gardein Ultimate Beefless Burgers. And Gardein Turk’y Cutlets (they remind me of Turkey Schnitzel!). And Field Roast Sausages! But since Canadian Thanksgiving is about to roll around this weekend, I’d have to say the Gardein Turk’y Cutlets, because they make an amazing Thanksgiving dinner. They come with this awesome mushroom gravy (which I love) and they taste great with a side of Cranberry sauce.

FAVOURITE thing about being vegan?

Feeling like I don’t hide from the truth, but live my values. If there’s anything I despise, it’s the “do as I say, not as I do” mentality. We all tell our kids they need to be kind to animals and never hurt anyone. Then we feed them animals that aren’t even substantially different from their own pets. It’s hypocritical, and it’s also avoidable. It’s easy to be vegan! (I tried to explain that earlier today to an interesting woman who was convinced there was no protein in plants. Like, none. And that if your kids didn’t drink milk, they wouldn’t grow properly. Does she know most asians didn’t drink milk until very recently? Amazing they survived! Anyway, I’m getting off track.

LEAST favourite thing about being vegan?

That’s easy: feeling rude when going to someone’s house. I’m a sociable person, and if there’s anything I hate, it’s hurting anyone’s feelings. I’m still working all this stuff out, and I worry a lot about offending people. Especially because even if you tell people ahead of time, most of them don’t really understand what vegan or plant-based even mean. Some people are stunned to find out that you don’t drink milk! They thought vegans were vegetarians who also didn’t eat fish! We need a serious public education program, in my opinion!
