PETA asks Doctor Who to Go Vegan

Is it time for a vegan Doctor Who? PETA thinks so, and said as much in their open letter to Doctor Who writer and producer Chris Chibnall. PETA’s UK Director, Elisa Allen, writes “eating dead animals simply doesn’t fit with the Doctor’s moral compass since … the show has “the central message of love for life in all its forms.”

And I’m inclined to agree. Eating animals is not only unnecessarily cruel, it’s also archaic. And since the good doctor is a Time Lord, it makes sense that he – or she, thanks to the casting of actress Jodie Whittaker in the role – would have a more enlightened perspective on both animals and food.

One of the things I’ve always loved about science fiction is its ability to question how things have always been done and open our eyes to new possibilities. I think the world is ready for a vegan Time Lord. And for those who are concerned that it might be overly preachy to have Dr. Who be vegan, I think it’s important to remember how many times the issue has surfaced in science fiction in interesting ways.

For example, in Star Trek The Next Generation the Enterprise had a food replicator that allowed the crew to eat anything their hearts desired without harming any animals in the process. And Doctor Who has been vegetarian on the show in the past as well.

A big deal? Yes and no.

I do think long time viewers probably fear that having a character like the Doctor be vegan would get in the way of the story, but I also doubt it would end up being a big deal. And of course, that’s also why it’s not a big deal to my personally either way.

But I do have to admit my kids get very excited by vegan characters in their favourite tv shows. And I do too, to be honest! And I may be an exception to the rule, but long before I went vegan, I believed in a vegan future (thanks, no doubt, to reading and watching way too much science fiction. And fortunately for the Doctor, the world is changing and it is becoming far easier to access plant-based foods (including the Doctor’s beloved jelly babies, as I discuss in the video!).

Thanks for watching!
