No oil! Ending Heart Disease with Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn in Calgary

Last week, my husband and I saw Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn speak here in Calgary about his research and program for preventing and reversing heart disease. It was a great experience, and so neat to see Dr. Esselstyn in person. His passion for medicine, and for his patients’ health in particular, is so inspiring!

We’re already vegan, but we aren’t completely WFPB, and we still eat plant-based oils. I found Dr. Esselstyn’s talk very impressive, in a large part because I’ve known people whose lives and health have been transformed by the plant based diet that he recommends.

Kate McGoey-Smith, the woman who arranged this event, is alive today because of a whole foods diet. Just over a decade ago, she was diagnosed with an extremely rare disease called idiopathic pulmonary arterial hypertension. She was given just a few years to live. At the time she was diagnosed, Kate was on insulin, oxygen, and nearly blind. Today its hard to believe that she’s ever been anything other than the picture of vibrant health.

15 months after starting a whole foods, plant-based oil free diet, Kate was removed from the lung transplant waiting list and her vision was restored. I met Kate almost a year ago at a vegan potluck in Calgary. When she told me her story, I was amazed. It’s one thing to hear about something like that on TV or in an interview, but quite different to meet someone face to face!

The challenge

Getting people to give up oil is a hard sell. So is veganism, for that matter! But if you are suffering from a serious health condition, such as cardiovascular disease, it is definitely worth giving it a serious try. And it’s also worth asking, why wait until you are in poor health to change your diet?

Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn also mentioned some disturbing health trends affecting young people. By the time kids graduate from high school, many are already exhibiting early signs of cardiovascular disease. It’s absolutely terrifying for me as a parent, and it should be inspiring major action beyond simply getting a prescription for Statin drugs. Statins will not solve the health crisis, because they cannot reverse the process of disease that caused the problem in the first place.

Turning this health crisis around is in our own hands. If you aren’t familiar with the benefits of a plant-based diet, please be sure to check out Dr. Michael Greger’s channel, Nutrition Facts, where he shares the latest health information on a regular basis.

It’s easy to feel powerless in the face of health challenges, but we have far more power to create positive change than we often think. As Dr. Esselstyn mentioned in his talk, a plant based diet gives you back the ability to influence your own health. And particularly in the case of heart disease, it’s wonderful to know that you don’t have to simply accept the hand that you have been dealt.
