Veggie Planet Review

Traveling as a vegan can be nerve-wracking, especially when you’re new to veganism! Thankfully, there are plenty of intrepid vegan travellers out there paving the way, and The Nomadic Vegan is a fantastic place to learn about eating vegan abroad. Author and blogger Wendy Werneth has been traveling all over the world for years, and she shares wonderful tips on vegan travel on her blog and in her books.

I recently finished reading Wendy’s latest book on international vegan travel. It’s called Veggie Planet, and it’s a fantastic resource for diners and travellers. The book examines 11 popular international destinations: China, Ethiopia, Greece, Turkey, India, Italy, Mexico, the Middle East, Morocco, Thailand and Vietnam.

Vegan by Demand vs. Accidentally Vegan

Wendy begins by discussing the difference between traveling to places that are vegan friendly by demand, such as in Portland or Berlin, where there are tons of vegan restaurants because there are lots of vegans there. She goes on to point out that many cuisines are vegan friendly more by accident (I might say that they were “incidently” rich in vegan options).

This is an excellent point.

People often assume that it’s the presence of vegan restaurants that means a nation or cuisine is vegan-friendly. But when you know a cuisine well, you begin to realize that’s not the case. For example, I find Colombian cuisine very vegan friendly, even though there are very few vegans in that country, and there are even fewer vegan restaurants (except perhaps in large cities like Bogota). Yet, there are plenty of “incidentally” vegan foods, like Yuca, lentils, plantain, arroz con coco, patacones, etc.

An Attitude of Abundance

On a related note, it’s pretty hard to put too much emphasis on having a positive attitude. I was talking to my mom the other day about finding vegan food when eating out. My mom loves dining out, and she’s had a pretty easy transition to veganism because she’s open and has a positive attitude about the options available to her. She mentioned that she has really enjoyed discovering new international cuisines (like Thai food) that are surprisingly vegan friendly!

In addition to all the information about the history and variety of plant based foods worldwide, Wendy also offers additional bonus materials free with the purchase of Veggie Planet. These include a pocket reference guide (handy for restaurants anywhere) and a list of common non-vegan ingredients found in the various cuisines. My personal favourite was the list the list of non-vegan ingredients. Instead of just stating the ingredients in English or pinyin (in the case of Chinese), she also includes the foods as written in their native Mandarin, Thai, Vietnamese, Amharic, Arabic, etc. I find this helpful, because I know that personally (in the case of Mandarin) my pronunciation is unintelligible, and having the characters to point to is a huge help.
